Needed and Lonely

Year 1/2

Learning Intention

Activities

Resources

To increase empathy for others and awareness of how personal feelings and behaviours can impact upon others.

To understand what makes a person feel needed and what it feels like, and why someone may feel lonely ..

Recap words needed and lonely. What do they mean?

Read ‘Leon and Bob'

Discussion : What happens in the story? How does Leon feel at the beginning of the story? Why does he feel lonely? What does he need to stop feeling lonely? How can he make a friend? How do you think Leon felt as he knocked on Bob's door? What was the first thing Leon said to Bob? What did Bob say back to Leon ? What could Leon say next to Bob to make friends?

Role play – Place someone in the middle of the circle. They pretend to feel lonely. They need a friend. Teacher nods at a child in the circle and they approach the child and say “Hello, my name is xxxx”. Child should answer. The first child should then think of something to say to make friends, and take their new friend back to the circle with them. Repeat with different children. How many different lines can we come up with which you could use to make friends?

Activity- With a partner write down as many lines as you can think of which would help you to make friends. Draw both of you meeting for the first time and saying one of these lines in a bubble speech.

Plenary – We all feel lonely sometimes. What can you do if you see someone feeling lonely on the playground? If we have a new child start our class, what things can we say to them to stop them feeling lonely?

Shy and Confident

Year 3/4

Learning Intention

Activities

Resources

To increase empathy for others and awareness of how personal feelings and behaviours can impact upon others.

To understand how a person might feel excluded and what it feels like to be loved.

Recap words shy and confident. What do they mean? Read ‘The gotcha smile' & discuss feelings in the story.

Discussion : How does Clarine feel on her first day at school? Shy or confident? Why? Why is it hard to begin a new school? What did Lisa do that was unkind at playtime? How did this make Clarine feel? What did her Mum suggest she should do? Why didn't it work? How do you think the boys felt when Clarine ran off with their ball? Why do you think she did that? What could they have done to solve the problem? What was Grandpa's idea? Is it a good idea? Why? Do you think its hard to shoot a gotcha smile at someone if you don't know them? Why?

Role play – The gotcha smile roulette. Identify a volunteer to play the game. They must stand in the middle of the circle. Give out cards to everyone else. All cards have a frowning face on them except one card which has a smiling face. All the children in the group have to frown ans the volunteer has fiver guesses at who has got the smiling card. He/ she finds out by shooting a gotcha smile at them. If they frown back they have a frowning card which they must show. However, if they shoot a gotcha smile back. They have the one smiling card. Can the volunteer identify the smiler within five guesses?

Discuss what does it feel like to smile at someone and not get a smile back? Does it fill you with confidence? Why? How hard is it not to smile if someone smiles at you?

Activity

Plenary : Think about the way you came in to the class this morning. Did you smile at your teacher? Dis they smile back? What effect can a frown first thing in the morning have on others? (You could role play a few children coming in to the classroom). How shall we come in tomorrow?

Feelings and Emotions: Satisfied and Unsatisfied

Year 5/6

Learning Intention

Activities

Resources

To increase empathy for others and awareness of how personal feelings and behaviours can impact upon others.

Define the feeling ‘satisfied'. What does it mean to feel satisfied? Is it an emotion that you feel regularly? How do you become satisfied?

Read ‘Dougal's deep sea diary'

Discussion : What is the story about? What are the central themes and issues in the book? How does Dougal feel as he travels to work each day? What words does he use to describe how her feels? What changes in Dougal's life to make him feel more satisfied with his life? What is the key to his happiness? What do you think of the illustrations? Can you spot the mermaid on each page? Why do you think the author used a diary as a vehicle for the story? How effective is it? Do you think there is a message in the story?

Role play : Set up six chairs as a bus in the middle of the circle. Six children to sit on chairs and travel to work. A seventh child acts as a reporter and asks each child in turn (with an imaginary microphone) where they are working today and how they feel about it. The children should think of boring jobs they would not like to do when they talk to the reporter, and explain why they are boring, eg “Im going to work in a fast food burger bar. All I'm going to do all day is flip burgers and put them in to a bun”. Decide as a class which job is the worst of the six. Now ask the six to get off the bus and identify six new children to get on the bus and go to work. Reporter to ask again where they are working today but this time children should describe a job they would love to do, that would really satisfy them. Class to vote on the most exciting, satisfying job.

Activity : Use a diary to write a description of your own adventures in a different environment . Make a list of possible environments as a class first.

Plenary – Why do people work in jobs that they don't like? What would you like to do when you leave school, what can you do now to help you achieve that goal? What widens your options when you leave school as to what you can do (qualifications)
