Define the feeling ‘satisfied'. What does it mean to feel satisfied? Is it an emotion that you feel regularly? How do you become satisfied?
Read ‘Dougal's deep sea diary'
Discussion : What is the story about? What are the central themes and issues in the book? How does Dougal feel as he travels to work each day? What words does he use to describe how her feels? What changes in Dougal's life to make him feel more satisfied with his life? What is the key to his happiness? What do you think of the illustrations? Can you spot the mermaid on each page? Why do you think the author used a diary as a vehicle for the story? How effective is it? Do you think there is a message in the story?
Role play : Set up six chairs as a bus in the middle of the circle. Six children to sit on chairs and travel to work. A seventh child acts as a reporter and asks each child in turn (with an imaginary microphone) where they are working today and how they feel about it. The children should think of boring jobs they would not like to do when they talk to the reporter, and explain why they are boring, eg “Im going to work in a fast food burger bar. All I'm going to do all day is flip burgers and put them in to a bun”. Decide as a class which job is the worst of the six. Now ask the six to get off the bus and identify six new children to get on the bus and go to work. Reporter to ask again where they are working today but this time children should describe a job they would love to do, that would really satisfy them. Class to vote on the most exciting, satisfying job.
Activity : Use a diary to write a description of your own adventures in a different environment . Make a list of possible environments as a class first.
Plenary – Why do people work in jobs that they don't like? What would you like to do when you leave school, what can you do now to help you achieve that goal? What widens your options when you leave school as to what you can do (qualifications) |
